Built for Lenders in Uganda

Loan management software for Uganda's Tier 4 lenders

Lendbox gives a SACCO, non-deposit-taking MFI or money lender in Uganda a shilling loan ledger with accounting under it, so the arrears figures in a UMRA return and the schedule a member sees come from the same loan record. See how Lendbox compares with other software for loan management.

How a Ugandan SACCO runs its loans on Lendbox

From member loan application to the UMRA return, on one record

Tier 4 lenders in Uganda run on mobile money and on member trust. These are the stages a SACCO loan officer or a money lender already works through; Lendbox keeps them together.

  1. Member records

Import members from the register you keep today, with the national ID number and MoMo line on file, or add them one at a time from the phone at a branch meeting.

  2. Application and approval

Capture the loan against the product and term the member qualifies for, then send it through the loans committee's approval ladder with every decision logged.

  3. Disbursement recorded

Record the payout to the member's MoMo or Airtel Money line or bank account, print the agreement and schedule in shillings, and let the ledger post the entries.

  4. Mobile money repayments posted

Post each MoMo or Airtel Money repayment against the loan as it lands, or the week's collections as one bulk batch. Reminders go out by SMS, email or WhatsApp before each due date.

  5. Arrears and the Tier 4 return

Ageing buckets and portfolio at risk by product, branch and officer give the days-in-arrears figures a UMRA return is built on, drawn from the loans rather than from a month-end tally.

Lending in Uganda

Tier 4 under UMRA, Tiers 1 to 3 under the Bank of Uganda

Uganda sorts lenders into tiers. Most SACCOs, non-deposit-taking MFIs and money lenders sit in Tier 4 under UMRA, with their own licensing, record-keeping and reporting rules.

Tier 4 regulator

UMRA (Tier 4 Microfinance Institutions and Money Lenders Act, 2016)

SACCOs, non-deposit-taking MFIs and money lenders are licensed by UMRA and keep records of every loan, its pricing and its repayments. Lendbox holds that record per loan, with the agreement, the schedule and every repayment and reminder attached.

Tiers 1 to 3

Bank of Uganda (microfinance deposit-taking institutions and credit institutions)

Deposit-taking institutions report prudential returns to the Bank of Uganda. Lendbox provides the credit-side ledger with double-entry accounting, trial balance, P&L and balance sheet; deposits are not part of the system.

Money lenders

Money lender licence from UMRA, with interest rate disclosure

Licensed money lenders disclose the rate and total cost to the borrower. Lendbox prints the schedule with interest, fees and penalties itemised, and the free interest rate converter on this site turns a monthly flat rate into the annual figure a licence asks you to state.

Credit reference

Credit reference bureaus licensed by the Bank of Uganda

Regulated lenders share repayment data with the bureaus. Lendbox keeps the full repayment history per borrower, so the record you report from is the record your officers see.

Payroll deductions

PAYE and NSSF

For SACCOs and lenders running staff loans, the payroll module's Uganda preset applies PAYE and NSSF and deducts staff loan repayments on the pay run; local service tax is noted as a caveat rather than computed.

Questions lenders in Uganda ask

Does Lendbox work for a Ugandan SACCO that only lends from member savings?

Yes, for the lending side. Loan records, repayments, arrears and the accounting behind them run in Lendbox in Ugandan shillings. The savings and share registers stay in the system you keep them in; Lendbox does not run deposit accounts.

How do MTN MoMo and Airtel Money repayments get onto the loan?

An officer posts each repayment against the loan when it lands on your line, or you upload a collection round as one bulk batch from an Excel template. Lendbox does not connect to MTN or Airtel, so nothing is pulled automatically; the posting and the receipt are logged on the loan.

Can I produce the arrears figures UMRA asks a Tier 4 lender for?

Lendbox gives you days in arrears per loan through the ageing buckets and the portfolio-at-risk report, by product, branch and officer. You present them in the form your return asks for; Lendbox does not file the return.

Can a loan officer post repayments from a village meeting?

Yes, from the mobile app, as long as the phone has a data connection. Entries post straight to the book at head office. The app does not capture offline and sync later, so a meeting in an area with no signal is written up when the officer is back in coverage.

Our loans are priced at a flat monthly rate. Can Lendbox state the annual rate?

The schedule prints with interest, fees and penalties itemised, and the free interest rate converter on this site turns a flat monthly rate into the effective annual rate a licence may ask you to disclose.

Is there a Ugandan payroll preset?

Yes. The payroll module ships a Uganda preset with PAYE and NSSF, and staff loan repayments are deducted on the pay run. Local service tax varies by authority and is flagged as a caveat for you to apply rather than computed.

What does Lendbox cost for a lender in Uganda?

A Tier 4 lender with one branch starts on Basic; Business and Growth cover two and three branches with more staff logins. Billing is in US dollars by card, and the pricing grid on this page gives a shilling equivalent at an indicative rate so the board can see the amount in its own budget currency.
