Built for Lenders in Zambia

Loan management software built in Zambia, for Zambian lenders

Lendbox is made in Lusaka and runs the loan books of microfinance institutions, money lenders and employer schemes in Zambia: kwacha from the first entry, mobile money repayments and disbursements through MTN, Airtel and Zamtel without leaving the loan screen, and a free plan to start on. See how Lendbox compares with other software for loan management.

How a Zambian MFI runs its book on Lendbox

From borrower KYC to a kwacha payout and back, without a bank queue

A credit-only MFI in Zambia lives on mobile money: the borrower is paid to a phone and repays from one. These are the stages Lendbox runs for Zambian lenders every day, with the mobile money leg built in rather than recorded afterwards.

  1. Borrower KYC

Capture the NRC, phone number and employer, and let AI document verification check the scanned NRC, payslip or bank statement before an officer spends time on the appraisal.

  2. Affordability and appraisal

Run the affordability assessment from the payslip, with NAPSA, PAYE and NHIMA already understood, so the instalment offered is one the borrower can carry.

  3. Approval ladder

Send the loan up the approval chain your policy sets, with each approval, decline or penalty waiver logged against the loan in the approval centre.

  4. Mobile money payout

Disburse straight to the borrower's MTN, Airtel or Zamtel line from the loan screen, from your Lendbox wallet, with the provider fee handled the way you choose: added to the loan, deducted from the payout, or absorbed.

  5. Collections by mobile money

Repayments come in over mobile money and post to the loan; reminders go out by SMS, email or WhatsApp before each due date, and a field officer can post a cash repayment from the phone where the client is.

  6. Arrears and the Bank of Zambia return

Ageing buckets and portfolio at risk by product, branch and officer give you the days-in-arrears figures a prudential return needs, drawn from the loans themselves rather than reconstructed at month-end.

Lending in Zambia

What the Bank of Zambia expects of a licensed lender, and where Lendbox fits

Zambia licenses credit-only microfinance institutions and deposit-taking MFIs under the Banking and Financial Services Act, with money lenders registered under the Money Lenders Act. All of them answer for the quality of their book.

Regulator

Bank of Zambia (Banking and Financial Services Act, 2017)

Microfinance institutions are licensed and supervised by the Bank of Zambia, and classified by whether they take deposits. Lendbox serves the credit side for both: a loan ledger with double-entry accounting underneath it, so the figures in a return are the figures in the trial balance.

Money lenders

Money Lenders Act registration

Smaller lenders operate under a money lender's certificate rather than an MFI licence. Lendbox's Basic plan and the Zambia-only free plan are priced for a one-branch money lender running a few hundred loans.

Loan classification

Days in arrears, with provisioning by class

Prudential returns classify loans by days past due and provision against each class. Lendbox's ageing buckets (1–30, 31–60, 61–90 and over 90 days) and the arrears dashboard give you the per-loan days in arrears to classify from, and the general ledger carries the provisioning entries you post.

Credit reference bureau

TransUnion Zambia

Licensed lenders share credit data with the bureau. Every repayment, missed instalment and settlement in Lendbox sits on the borrower's record, so the history you report is the history your officers see.

Mobile money

MTN Mobile Money, Airtel Money, Zamtel Kwacha

The three networks carry most repayments and payouts in Zambia. Lendbox is the one market where both legs are built in: collections and disbursements run through the Lendbox wallet to and from any of the three, with the provider's fee shown before you confirm.

Money in Zambia

Kwacha in the book, kwacha on the phone, kwacha on the invoice

Zambia is the one market where Lendbox moves the money as well as recording it. The book runs in kwacha, repayments and payouts run through mobile money, and your Lendbox subscription is billed in kwacha too.

Books in ZMW

Every new workspace starts in kwacha. Loans, schedules, statements, the general ledger and every report follow.

  • Loan agreements and schedules printed in kwacha
  • Trial balance, P&L and balance sheet in ZMW
  • Borrower statements with a running balance in kwacha

Mobile money built in

Collect and disburse over MTN, Airtel and Zamtel from the loan screen, through your Lendbox wallet, with the provider fee quoted before you confirm.

  • Payout to the borrower's line at loan activation
  • Fee added to the loan, deducted from the payout, or absorbed
  • Wallet top-up and withdrawal to bank or mobile money

Zambian payroll and affordability

The payroll module and the affordability assessment both understand Zambian deductions out of the box.

  • NAPSA, PAYE and NHIMA on every pay run
  • Affordability read from the payslip with those deductions applied
  • Staff loan repayments deducted on the run

Integrations

Mobile money, built in for Zambian lenders

Borrowers repay by MTN, Airtel or Zamtel mobile money and the repayment posts to the loan when the network confirms it. Loans pay out the same way.

Questions lenders in Zambia ask

Can Lendbox pay a borrower out over MTN or Airtel mobile money?

Yes, and this is built in rather than recorded afterwards. When a loan is activated in a Zambian workspace, you can disburse to the borrower's MTN, Airtel or Zamtel line from your Lendbox wallet. The provider's fee is quoted first, and you choose whether it is added to the loan, deducted from the payout, or absorbed by you.

Do mobile money repayments post to the loan automatically?

Repayments collected through the Lendbox wallet post to the loan they belong to. Cash or bank repayments are posted by an officer, from the dashboard or from the phone where the client is, or as a bulk batch for a collection round. The app needs a data connection; nothing is captured offline and synced later.

Is Lendbox billed in kwacha?

Yes. Zambia is the one market where the subscription itself is billed in ZMW, paid by mobile money or card, and Zambian lenders also get the lower legacy price sheet shown on this page rather than the standard dollar prices.

Is there really a free plan?

Yes, for Zambian lenders only. It is a working plan for a small book, not a trial, and you move to Basic when you outgrow it. The 30-day trial of the paid plans is separate and also needs no card.

Can I get the figures a Bank of Zambia prudential return asks for?

Lendbox gives you days in arrears per loan through the ageing buckets and the portfolio-at-risk report, by product, branch and officer, plus a trial balance, profit and loss and balance sheet from the double-entry ledger. You classify and provision against your own policy, and post the provisioning entries to the ledger; Lendbox does not file the return.

Does the affordability assessment understand Zambian payslips?

Yes. The affordability tab on a loan reads the payslip, including by AI import, applies NAPSA, PAYE and NHIMA, and compares the proposed instalment with what is left. The same deductions run on the payroll module's Zambia preset.

Which Zambian lenders already run on Lendbox?

Kaikala Investment Limited, Poacher Loans, Abramuke General Dealers and Joshe Money Lending have published case studies on this site, each written with the lender. They cover a staff-loan scheme, a money lender that moved off spreadsheets, and an MFI that took on investors with the reporting Lendbox gave it.

Where is Lendbox based and supported from?

Lusaka. The team that builds Lendbox is in Zambia, which is why the kwacha, the three mobile money networks and the local statutory deductions came first. Support is in the same time zone as you.
